The Costa Brava is well known for its excellent possibilities for underwater sports. This makes it one of the most important diving spots of the western Mediterranean. Every year thousands of lovers of diving visit the waters of this region. |

The coast offers wonderfully beautiful underwater landscapes with a rich flora and fauna. Many diving spots are still intact so that species like congereels, morenes, langoustes and lobsters, scorpion fish, octopuses, wrasses and cuttlefish can easily be seen. Tapestries of gorgonias in many different colours cover the see bottom and in the blue light shoals of barracudas, breams and perches pass by. Amateur photographers are offered excellent opportunities to see a great variety of a.o. slugs and anemones. |

Particularly the nature reserve of the Medes-Isles, near L’Estartit has a great diversity of flora and fauna. The Isles have been protected since 1990 and it is strictly forbidden to disturb the natural surroundings. That’s why the fishing stock has grown tremendously. Fish swarm around you constantly, which is superb for photo-and videographers. There is a lot to be seen for divers of every level. There are spots where diving is possible at a depth of 10 to 15 metres and others where a deeper dive is possible. There are some big caves, too. Because of the special protection as a nature reserve there are some restrictions. Every diving centre can take not more than 50 divers to the isles a day. For that reason it deserves recommendation to book your diving trip timely. |

There are, however, many other beautiful diving spots along the coast (a.o. at Begur, Tamariu, Aigua Blava, Llafranc, Carella de Palafruguell, L’Escala and Palamos) so you can always go somewhere else. Llafranc for instance has three reefs with depths of 30 to 54 metres at five minutes distance by boat. Their underwater rock-faces are fully covered with red and yellow gorgons, anemones, various sponge species and spirographs. The crevices of Tamariou are also well worth a visit. Big basses are the special attraction there and here too are a lot of colours. Near Palamos a shipwreck can be seen, the Boreas. |
